Spatially variable provenance of the Chinese Loess Plateau

چکیده

Abstract Loess sequences of the Chinese Plateau (CLP) compose one most complete Neogene–Quaternary terrestrial paleoclimatic archives. Understanding CLP's sediment sources is critical to tracing Asian aridification, atmospheric circulation patterns, and monsoon evolution. Commonly, sediments that Quaternary strata CLP are considered largely homogeneous, thus numerous studies have applied a uniform source model when attempting use CLP-derived proxies as paleoclimate indicators. Here we present large-n detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology data from CLP. These support spatial variability in provenance across At least three distinct zones recognized for loess strata: central western, eastern, northeastern. received primarily their neighboring river systems. This finding conflicts with classic views attribute principally deserts north west We conclude fluvial processes, precipitation, played an important previously underemphasized role dust production northern China. Furthermore, nonuniformity raises questions about validity using information archived make sweeping regional interpretations.

The Loess Plateau

The Loess Plateau (34°–40°N, 103°–114°E) is situated in the northern part of Central China (Fig. 2.1). It borders on North China Plain in the east, adjoins Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the west, stands in the north of Qinling Mountains, and neighbors Inner Mongolia Plateau in the north. The Loess Plateau is a part of the dryland region in northwest China, with its altitude in the range of 800–3000 ...

Tetraether biomarker records from a loess-paleosol sequence in the western Chinese Loess Plateau

The ubiquitous occurrence of glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) in soils and their ability to record temperature and environmental changes offer the prospect of independently reconstructing continental paleotemperature and paleoenvironment from the loess-paleosol sequences (LPS) from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). In this study we present records of GDGT-derived proxies for the las...

Rainfall Characteristics of the Liudaogou Catchment on the Northern Loess Plateau of China

The objectives of this study were to understand the rainfall characteristics of thewind-water erosion crisscross region on the northern Loess Plateau, China, to provide basisfor the studies on mitigation of soil erosion, estimation on surface water resources andlocal hydrological circle, etc. The Liudaogou Catchment with representative climatic andhydrologic conditions of wind-water erosion cri...

Magnetic record of Mio-Pliocene red clay and Quaternary loess-paleosol sequence in the Chinese Loess Plateau

This article presents magnetic data of a 300-m-thick Mio-Pliocene red clay and Quaternary loess-paleosol sequence near Chaona town in the Central Chinese Loess Plateau. Detailed magnetostratigraphy shows that the aeolian red clay began to accumulate at ca. 8.1 Ma. Here, we presented a high-resolution rock magnetic data at 20-40 cm intervals within 4.5-8 ka span per sample of this section, which...
